““I knew I had to find a way to get to Jaguar Land Rover. University was my backup plan.” ”.

Introduction:

Jessica Okoro, founder of BeScience STEM, speaks with Liam, a fourth-year higher apprentice at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). Liam works in the advanced battery engineering department in powertrain, helping shape the future of the automotive industry. He shares his passion for engineering, the importance of apprenticeships, and his experience at JLR.

Segment 1: Back to the Future

Liam had a strong interest in engineering from a young age, influenced by his father, an engineer. Always fascinated by cars, particularly Jaguars, due to his upbringing in Coventry. Enjoyed STEM subjects in school, especially physics, chemistry, biology, and maths. Not naturally gifted in maths but worked hard and focused on learning through practice. Prioritized academics over social distractions, asking his parents to push him to excel.

Segment 2: The Game Changer

Chose an apprenticeship over university, despite the pressure from school to go down the academic route. Knew that hands-on learning was the best path for him and that JLR was his dream company. Discovered JLR’s apprenticeship program through research and visits to Coventry’s Transport Museum. The application process involved submitting a CV, completing psychometric tests, and attending an assessment center. Found the interview and assessment center nerve-wracking but prepared by researching JLR’s mission and values.

Segment 3: Good, Bad, and Ugly

Faced technical difficulties with online psychometric tests, including power outages, causing stress. The assessment center was challenging, but support from facilitators helped calm his nerves. Found email communication difficult at first but worked on improving his professional writing skills. Emphasized the importance of preparation, researching company values, and demonstrating relevant skills.

Segment 4: Securing the Bag

Apprentices at JLR receive a competitive salary and benefits comparable to graduate schemes. JLR funds all apprenticeship training, including HNC courses, with no tuition fees. Offers employee benefits such as discounts on products, sports events, and technology. Emphasized that apprenticeships provide hands-on experience that universities often lack. Sees a bright future in battery technology and aims to continue growing within JLR.
