STEM Career Talks_ Get Inspired, Unlock your Future

The transition from classroom to workplace can feel overwhelming, if not intimidating – but it can also be a revealing experience. At BeScience we have come up with STEM Career Talks to support our students throughout this process.

Online events where students from schools all over the world meet STEM professionals and explore career opportunities, develop key skills, and gain real-world insights into different industries.

Speakers are real-life role models – from lab and data-based roles to communications and management positions – who ‘tell a story’ about their career path: through anecdotes and introspections, they depict their journey including successes as well as failures, recounting what was their inspiration and how they come up to work at their companies. These ‘narrators’ present a first-hand account of day-to-day life on their job to help students consider whether such post might be an option for them – short of trying out the job, for example in an internship.

Career Talks demonstrate the relevance and connection of what is taught in the classroom to the core of the job, contextualising learning and bringing curriculum to life. Guests share what subjects they studied and how these are relevant now, alongside some broader insights into emerging recruitment trends. They advise students on relevant technical skills and pass down tips for successful jobs applications and interviews. Opportunities for listeners to ask questions during or after the talk are always appreciated.

Such events are a tremendously valuable resource for students and recent graduates to learn more about the diverse range of jobs available in the fastest-growing sectors of the future. Hearing from different perspectives and approaches will enlighten pupils on all academic and vocational routes available. STEM Ambassadors also provide useful life lessons which are incredibly inspiring – you’ll feel encouraged to find your own way, and won’t be afraid of giving a try!

These meaningful career conversations allow informed decision-making about future career paths, encourage industry engagement and lead to networking opportunities.

As part of our #1MillIntoStem initiative, with STEM Career Talks we are committed to creating pathways and equipping students with the support they need to thrive. Careers is not something that should only be considered at the end of a student’s education, it is vital that young people are introduced to Career Talks as early as possible. We offer schools ad-hoc structured programmes and guidance towards career encounters with greatest impact.

By the end of this experience, you’ll have a clearer roadmap for how to start your journey in STEM!
